Hansen Type I 

The disc material extrudes (squirts out) suddenly due to a premature aging process.

Common in dogs known as Chrondrodystrophic breeds. 

More common in younger dogs (ages 2-6 yrs old).

The disc hardens, dehydrates, and calcifies. It ends up like a gritty texture.

So, why does the disc material extrude suddenly?

The disc material extrudes suddenly due to the hardening of the disc. Since the disc loses water and isn't as spongy anymore, it cannot absorb spinal shock.

So this means that sudden movement, a jump, or even a wrong step, the hardened disc shoots out the tough outer shell and pushes directly into the spinal cord.

Hansen Type II 

The though outer fibrous ring of the disc slowly degenerates, thickens, and gradually bulges (protrudes).

The disc protrudes progressively upward to compress the spinal cord.

This is a slow, chronic process.

Symptoms worsen little by little over months and/or years.

Hansen Type III

Also known as acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (ANNPE).

A normal, healthy disc suddenly bursts through a sudden tear.

Hansen type III is for the traumatic injuries that resulted in herniations.

There is no ongoing spinal compression. Rather it leaves a contusion (bruise) on the spinal cord.

Since the disc was healthy and not calcified, surgery will not be effective as there is no lingering material.
