Awareness Brings Understanding
Throughout the year, there are important days, weeks, and months dedicated to animal health, pet disabilities, veterinary care, pet loss, and mental health. This calendar highlights observances that may be meaningful to our IVDD community and the people who love and care for them.
Some opportunities to learn, some to celebrate, and others are gentle reminders to check in on ourselves and one another.

Animal Pain Awareness Month: Recognizing pain starts with knowing what to look for. This month encourages pet owners to learn more about the signs of pain and the importance of speaking with a veterinary professional when something seems different.Â

Responsible Dog Ownership Month: A reminder that responsible dog ownership goes beyond food and cuddles. It includes veterinary care, safety, education, understanding your dogs needs, and advocating for their well being throughout their life.

National Service Dog Ownership Month: A time to recognize the incredible work of service dogs and the important roles they play in supporting people with disabilities.
National Pet Memorial Month: A month to remember the special companions who are no longer physically beside us while honoring their memories, love, and paw prints they left behind.
National Pet Insurance Month: An opportunity for pet owners to learn about pet insurance and understand options such as coverage, exclusions, waiting periods, and pre-existing condition policies before an unexpected veterinary expense occurs. This is a great time to spread awareness on the importance of pet insurance, especially for a pet that could develop symptoms.

National Suicide Prevention Month: A reminder that mental health matters. Caring for a pet through illness, disability, recovery, or loss can carry its own emotional weight, and caregivers deserve care and support as well. You are not alone.
